Breast-cancer survivor: Mammogram saved her life

Jean Haddock of rural Willow Springs wants her example to help others with early detection

Jean Haddock of rural Willow Springs says she would not be here today if it had not been for an annual mammogram she received at Ozarks Medical Center. With October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Haddock wants to urge others not to forget the annual exam if they are older than 40 .

Always faithful about getting an annual mammogram, Haddock can name the exact year she forgot to schedule the diagnostic test used to detect abnormal growths in the breasts.

“I missed one year – 1998, and in 1999, the cancer showed up,” said Haddock. She praised her physician at OMC’s Cancer Treatment Center for walking through her options with her and her husband. “It kind of scared me at first,” she said. “I prayed about it, and I felt confident that everything was going to be OK.”

She had a biopsy Feb. 19, 1999, and a lumpectomy surgery less than three weeks later on March 9. She then underwent 28 radiation treatments as a precaution and for five years, she took tamoxifen, an anti-estrogen drug used to treat breast cancer. Every six months, she had a mammogram, and now for the last few years, she is back to getting just annual exams. She also keeps regular appointments with her OMC radiation oncologist Garry Brown, DO.

Haddock said she never got sick from the radiation treatments. In fact, she said she drove herself to each appointment and back home after the treatment.

She said she chose the lumpectomy as opposed to a full mastectomy after reviewing her information with her doctor. He felt confident the cancer could be removed without taking the entire breast. About one-third of her right breast was removed during the surgery.

“It was the right decision,” she said. “I’m just so thankful.”

Once she learned she had cancer, Haddock said attitude made the difference. “You have to go through it with as good an outlook as you can.”

Her advice to others: “Be sure to get a mammogram regularly, do self-exams on your breasts and stay on top of your own health.

“If I had waited and missed even one more year (of getting a mammogram), it would have been too late,” she said. “But praise the Lord. He was watching over me.”

Now, after eight years, Haddock said she enjoys reading, doing puzzles and going to bluegrass festivals and events.

If you already are established with a physician, you may schedule your own mammogram appointment with Ozarks Medical Center by calling the Centralized Scheduling Department at 417-257-5901. If you do not have a regular physician, please call for a physician’s directory at OMC Public Relations at 417-257-6735.

WEST PLAINS — The Ozarks Medical Center Foundation Golf Tournament drew 20 teams with a total of 80 golfers at its recent annual event..

“We had a great time,” said Robin Morgan, director of the OMC Foundation. “I want to thank all of the tournament sponsors. It was especially exciting to see the great turnout of teams. No one won the hole-in-one or the putting contests, but there’s always next year.”

Three places were awarded West Plains Chamber of Commerce gift certificates in each of three flights, with Callaway gift certificates given as player gifts, said Morgan.

In the championship flight, first place went to the Great Rivers Distributing team of Greg Beykirch, Jay Garnett, Jeff McDaniels and Phil Wade.
Second place went to the Eleven Point Ranch team of Jasper Warren, Norman Hollis, Seth Huddleston and Mike Warren.
