Kidney specialist to join medical staff at OMC
Ozarks Medical Center will welcome Hussein H. Alhawari, MD, to the organization’s medical staff beginning Aug. 3. Alhawari is a nephrologist, or physician who has been educated and trained in internal medicine diseases, kidney diseases, kidney transplantation, hypertension and dialysis therapy. His office will be located 3000 Independence Square in the OMC Nephrology Clinic.
“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Alhawari to OMC,” said OMC President and CEO David Zechman. “His specialties and experience will fill a great need in this community and allow more patients to receive quality care close to home.”
As a nephrologist, Alhawari specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of problems relating to kidney function, including kidney stones, high blood pressure, kidney disease and various metabolic disturbances. He will also manage the care of dialysis patients.
“I am so proud and pleased to be part of the OMC family,” Alhawari said. “People here are very friendly and welcoming. I look forward to building up an excellent nephrology service at OMC.”
Alhawari received his degree in medicine and surgery from Jordan University of Science and Technology, located in northern Jordan. Here, he was ranked third in his medical class. He then spent a year interning at the Ministry of Health in Jordan and received his Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduate Certification. Alhawari completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, Ark. Also at UAMS, he completed a fellowship with the Division of Nephrology.
In 2007, Alhawari received the Thomas E. Andreoli Award for excellence during his time as a resident in Internal Medicine. He also has taken part in a number of research efforts at UAMS including one on the history of acute kidney injury and another on the BK virus infection in kidney transplant patients.
Alhawari said a variety of interests and goals drew him into nephrology as a specialty.
“First and foremost, I have a personal belief that nephrology is one of the strongest and most effective specialties that affect the lives of patients, in addition to being one of the most exciting and comprehensive fields of medicines,” he said. “I believe the scope of nephrology has expanded substantially throughout the recent years.
Alhawari is a member of the American Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, the American College of Physicians and the Jordan Medical Association.
