The Ozarks Medical Center Lights of Life Christmas tree is now shining as a tribute in honor and memory of many after the 20th annual community tree lighting ceremony on Dec 1.

The OMC Foundation Lights of Life campaign gives area residents an opportunity to honor and remember their loved ones by sponsoring a tree light for a minimum $10 donation, according to OMC Foundation Director Robin Morgan. Funds raised during the Lights of Light campaign benefit several programs and services, including the OMC Foundation Endowment, the OMC Cancer Treatment Center and Riverways Hospice of OMC. The names of those whom the tree honors will be displayed in the OMC lobby now through the end of December.

The evening’s keynote speaker was OMC Board of Directors member Travis Morrison, who attended the very first Lights of Life tree lighting ceremony 20 years ago.

Morrison said in addition to raising needed funds for the hospital, the tree’s lights are a “sparkling reminder” of loved ones, whom we chose to honor, celebrate or remember.

Morrison also paid a special tribute to the people who keep OMC shining all through the year, the employees.

“I believe the Tree of Lights also represents everyone that works at OMC,” he said, adding that during a recent hospital visit, he found “sparkling lights” everywhere.

“Regardless of what department you work in – nursing, medical staff, ancillary services, dietary, housekeeping, maintenance, administration, patient accounts, volunteers – your shining light makes this hospital shine,” he said. “When you shine and the hospital shines, our community is made better, our lives are made better. What you do is very important. This very moment, someone upstairs is being cared for in a very personal way, at an important and fearful time, by an OMC shining light.”

Chosen to light this year’s tree were David Huddleston and Bonnie Sanders. Huddleston, who recently retired after 37 years of nursing at OMC, was there to represent all of the former and retired employees of OMC. Sanders, a nurse manager and long time OMC employee, represented the current OMC staff.

Also at the Lights of Life ceremony, the Rev. Clarence Burton gave the invocation, Morgan gave the welcome and OMC President and CEO David Zechman introduced Morrison. The OMC Singers group performed a variety of holiday favorites. Singers this year included Director Carla Perisho, Linda Agnew, Melody Martin, Fran Meek, Barrylyn Soundararajan, Rhonda Spreutels, Debra Stewart, Doug Vargas and Ruth Warren.

Those still wishing to place a light on the Lights of Life Christmas tree to honor or in memory of someone may do so by sending a $10 tax-deductible donation to the OMC Foundation. For more information about “Lights of Life” or to request a donation form, please call 417-257-5700.
