West Plains native John Chad Gleghorn is receiving hands-on pharmacy experience during a five-week externship at Ozarks Medical Center.
Gleghorn, a Doctor of Pharmacy candidate at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, is the son of Kevin and Kelly Gleghorn, West Plains, and is a graduate of West Plains High School.
Gleghorn will be at OMC for the remainder of January and part of February. While at OMC, he will learn about the day-to-day operations of hospital pharmacy and will have the opportunity to shadow pharmacists in various departments. He also will learn about medications used during procedures and treatments.
Gleghorn said he plans to return to West Plains to establish a career once he graduates from the six-year pharmacy program in May.
“I chose pharmacy as a career because I wanted to return to the West Plains area and be involved with the health care system,” he said. “Pharmacy seemed like a logical choice due to the aging population and the increased need for pharmacists in the area.
“I look forward to serving the people of West Plains and am glad to be home again.”
OMC Pharmacist Ashley Hart said externships allow students to experience the differences between hospital and retail pharmacy.
“This gives pharmacy students the chance to get hands-on experience to assist them with future career decisions,” she added.
Gleghorn has also completed externships at Walgreen’s Wellness Clinic; the St. Louis VA. Medical Center, John Cochran Division; and St. John’s Mercy Hospital, all in St. Louis, as well as Cox South Hospital in Springfield and St. John’s St. Francis Hospital in Mountain View.
He is a member of the American Pharmaceutical Association. He is engaged to Kendra Adkisson of West Plains and they are planning a July wedding.
